Hey ladies! I hope you are getting as excited as I am for spring to get here! I don’t get as excited about spring clothing as I do for the fall season but I certainly am ready for warmer weather and sandals! I want to help you find the essentials you will need for a great spring wardrobe.
These essentials are just basics that are the “canvas” for your wardrobe. Think of it like a painting. You start with a canvas and build on it to make your picture from there. You can not build the picture without the canvas. Similarly you can not build a functional wardrobe without the basic “canvas” pieces.
For your essentials I am going to give you suggestions to create a good shopping list. When choosing your items remember to choose things that are more basic and will give you the most options. There should be a version of what I recommend at most places you choose to shop. I will also provide some links for you on things that I have found that would work for your “canvas”.

Essentials for Your Spring Wardrobe
J Crew Perfect Rain Jacket // Madewell White Jeans // Caslon Striped Short Sleeve Cotton Blend T-Shirt // Madewell Northside Vintage T-Shirt // Vans UA Authentic Knotted Lace Chambray Sneaker // J Crew Classic Denim Jacket // Sannibel Platform Wedge Sandal
Versatile T-Shirts
Basic T-Shirts in Black, White & Grey – A crewneck, scoop or v-neck style t-shirt in black, white and grey will give you the most versatility. The boat neck, jewel neck, cowl neck, ect. options are limited when it comes to layering. These types of necklines can be in the “art work” or additions you make to complete your wardrobe.
Striped T-Shirt – I would choose a striped t-shirt that is white with another color. My choice is a navy and white because I can wear it with almost anything I have for layering.
A fun Graphic T-Shirt – This is considered a trendy item but I think it can also be a fun basic. They often come in neutral colors so they can be paired with lots of different things for an updated look. I often choose my graphic tees over my solid ones!
Simple Button Downs
For Spring I would recommend an easy to wear chambray shirt and a stylish white blouse. A good chambray shirt can take you many places from an easy casual day outfit with white jeans and flats or to dinner with your husband in white jeans and heels. The white shirt can also be worn a similar way. Both options would look great over a dress and tied in the front.
Print Blouse
There are lots of options for a print blouse out there for the spring season. Find out what is in for the season and focus on that. This is great to have in your essentials because it will help add some pizazz to all those solid neutral colors.
A Neutral Cardigan
Choose a cardigan that would work over most everything. Maybe a navy, tan or gray color. These colors will pair well with everything else you choose. I also recommend finding one made with cotton, acrylic or a blend like cotton/viscose. I would try to stay away from wool.
Lightweight Jacket and Blazer
I love a good jacket especially when it can be casual or dressy. I use to say choose between these but now I say add both of these items for a stronger canvas for your wardrobe. The best part about spring versions of these items is you can find them in cotton. I found a blazer at the Loft that has become a staple in my wardrobe the past couple of seasons. I have caused so many of my family and friends to get this blazer and they were not disappointed.
Denim Jacket
I know everyone would not agree but I think a denim jacket is a must in our wardrobes today. I keep one in my wardrobe and I wear it year round. It is also the perfect piece to wear in the weird transitional seasons.
White Jeans/Regular Jeans
I know you might be saying there is not way you are going to wear a pair of white jeans but I have to try to push you in this direction. They are the best option for the spring and summer seasons to look put together but warm weather ready. There are so many different options out there you should be able to find a pair to fit you body type. This is as essential as black jeans in the fall and winter season.
Neutral Pair of Pants
If you have a professional job or go to church on Sunday’s it is essential that you have a neutral pant in your wardrobe for the spring season. I would recommend a navy but you could also do a camel, grey, cream or tan color. It is also important for you to look at the material it is made out of. If you are in the south stay away from wools.
Appropriate Shorts
I feel like shorts are a necessity for some people but if you do not wear them that is fine too. If you live in the south or a tropical climate than these are must have. There are so many different lengths and styles to choose from, so just pick what works best for your comfort level.
Flattering Skirt
If you will wear a skirt you should always choose the most flattering style for your body. It should stay a solid color or neutral print so you can pair all your other things with it. This could even be a great denim skirt if it fits into your lifestyle. Just choose something that you would wear more often.
All-Occasion Dress
Having a great dress can take you a lot of places. You can wear it by itself or with a jacket or cardigan over it. For a spring basic, look for something that can go either casual or dressy. This dress should be able to take you to a shower, non-formal wedding, church, work and play.
Rain Jacket
I feel like this is absolutely essential for your spring wardrobe. It rains a lot in the spring and there are usually some really good stylish options available. Some are so cute now you would never think they were considered a rain jacket. The rain jacket can be any color you want. In fact, you can have fun with the color and even choose a print.
Shoes:
Closed toe flat – It is realIy up to you what style flat you choose. I would stick with a neutral color like black, tan, gray or even blush. You will add other shoes later but this one will be your basic shoe when nothing else works. It should be something that is compatible with any of your outfits.
Sandal – Pick something that again is versatile and a solid color. What is your favorite style sandal? Whatever that is choose it because you will wear it the most. Just make sure you choose something that will easily go with most of your basic pieces.
Low slip-on sneaker – I added this as an essential because I think it is something that has become so popular in the last few years that it has become a necessity. If you purchase this in a neutral color like black or tan, it will literally go with any of your casual outfits.
This list covers every area of your clothing and will give you a great starting point for your spring wardrobe. With these pieces you could essentially have a wardrobe without adding anything else. I would tell you not to stop here but that is totally up to you. The fun part begins after you have your basics. Adding in your favorite prints, trends and just some fun things will give you a complete and versatile wardrobe.
Let me know if there is something you have that is an essential that I have not listed here!
Thanks a bunch!
